I found the discussion to be quite interesting. I keep wondering why we have discarded our old architecture designs which were quite adapted to our local climate and customs in favour of modern designs that only encourage us to use (read waste) more energy. I go to some of the older houses in the Pindi area (I am sure there are many all over Pakistan) and you hardly need fans in the rooms. The ceilings are high and the air circulates freely in the rooms. The “modern” designs are so ill adapted to the climate here that not only do you need air conditioning in the summer but also extensive heating in the winter. I don’t think that we as a country or as a planet can afford to waste precious resources like this.
ps: Just in case I am misunderstood. I am not necessarily advocating going back to the old designs, although this could be a possibility. With the innovations possible today, with high tech materials, simulations, our improved knowledge of the environment, we should be able to come up with even more environment friendly and energy efficient designs than the traditional ones, not the other way round.

i am a student of Ms. Sheba we really adore her . i would just like to say that the existing officials of the architecture dept. tend to be more concerned with aesthetics and lose out on the practicality of design. we desperately need architectural firms to register each project with these organizations so that there is not only a record of their projects but also the organizations will then assign officials to look over the projct forming a chain involving the architectural firms and the contractors as well
