Although people did come out on the streets against the KESC non-supply of electricity – there is a few hours of rioting, later everything subsides and people go back to their daily routine. This is not a permanent solution.
As everyone knows the KESC does not supply electricity, yet at the same time overcharges. I have calculated that upto 500 hours of electricity is not being supplied every month, to top it all the KESC does nothave a fixed rate. There are slab rates which is grossly unjust and unfair, there should be a single rate regardless of the amount of electricity has been consumed. Throughout the world electricity is a minor expense, but Pakistan it takes away 35% of ones income.
The solution does not lie in rioting, it lies Mohalla Commitees. These commitees can hire lawyers and lodge an FIR against the KESC on the charging for electricity which is not supplied of fraud. If this is done on a citywide basis. The billing and supply depertments of the KESC are seperate and autonomous. The billing department does not care if electricity is not supplied.
I have yet to see people forming commitees to solve their day to day problems. Somehow people are afraid. A democratic process works if people are prepared to form committees for their individual different problems. Once the KESC is sued for a whole range of problems.
The the international price of oil has fallen from US$ 144 to US$ 36, the KESC is acting as if the oil price has not fallen. If the KESC is not accountable to the people of Karachi then who is it accountable to? I recently went to one of the complaint centres one of the officers attending me said that from next month whenever there is loadshedding it will be for three hours at a stretch.
It looks a good effort in these dark days of violence. I am always of opinion that there should be skilled personalities in the live programs of different TV Channels. But we always see some bad reputed politicians in front of us who always changes the direction of discussion in their own favour. We need some good out spoken skilled personalities every day, who tell us about the realities of our National Past, efforts of present, and Plans of Future.
We need some struggle to push back the enemies of humanity, brotherhood, Nationalism, Religion, and of course of our country.
Your efforts are admirable and we believe that such people are required all the time to motivate all of us who are silent force of this country.
